Census Records for censuses from 1841 to 1911 are available online for the payment of a fee or subscription to a service. Use of an Internet search engine will provide several options.

GENUKI Norfolk

GENUKI Norfolk is part of GENUKI, the UK and Ireland Genealogical Service.  This site contains a wealth of genealogical and other historical information about Norfolk in general and Barton Turf in particular, with links to other sources of information. This includes census information and various church records.


Norfolk Family History Society

The Norfolk Family History Society welcomes people researching their Norfolk ancestors and family history. They currently have around 3,800 members researching their Ancestors in Norfolk, including members from as far afield as Australia and U.S.A.

The Society's collection of genealogical resources encompass parish register transcripts, monumental inscriptions, census returns, wills, family trees, pedigrees, photographs and a wide range of published work to help people trace their family's Norfolk origins.

Norfolk Surnames List

The Norfolk Surnames List is a list of surnames being researched in the county of Norfolk. These surnames are associated with their researchers' e-mail addresses to assist in making connections with other researchers. In August 2011, there were 5 listings on the site for surnames specifically from Barton Turf, for the surnames AMIS, CORK, HAZELL, KNIGHTS and PIKE.


Oxford Dictionary of National Biography

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is an illustrated collection of over 56,000 specially written biographies of the men and women who shaped all aspects of Britain's past, from the fourth century BC to the year 2004. The dictionary does not include any living people. Entries relevant to Barton Turf include Antony Norris, William Gunn, John Potter (who married Elizabeth Venner) and Dawson Turner (father of Harriet Gunn). The online version is a subscription service, but many public libraries have subscribed and you may be able to access the records through your library membership. In the case of Norfolk, use the Norfolk Online Library Catalogue Search Homepage to link to Online Subscriptions in the Online Services window and use the Library card login.

Google Genealogy Search is a free genealogy site which will help you use Google™ for your research. It will create a series of different searches using tips or "tricks" that will likely improve your results. The different searches will give you many different ways of using Google to find ancestry information on the Internet.


Norfolk Transcription Archive

The Norfolk Transcription Archive is intended to provide an archive of records that will assist genealogists and local historians alike, currently based on records relating to the county of Norfolk. For Barton Turf there are records of baptisms, banns, marriages, burials and censuses.


Family Search

Family Search is a service provided by the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  It includes records from around the world.  Although they are not comprehensive they often provide information not readily available elsewhere.  There are four aspects of the service which are particularly relevant to Norfolk:

Free BMD

Free BMD provides access to transcripts of  the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales from 1837-1983.  As part of the Free BMD project, work is under way to transcribe parish records, details of which can be found at FreeReg Norfolk and census records - see FreeCEN for coverage.

Parish registers from most, but not all, Norfolk parishes including Barton Turf.

Poor Law Union Records, 1796-1900.

East Norfolk electoral lists from 1832 to 1915 which include Barton Turf.


Family History Archives is a collection of published genealogy and family history books. Of particular relevance to Barton Turf is Walter Rye’s collection of The monumental inscriptions in the hundred of Tunstead, in the county of Norfolk, a copy of which can be downloaded as a PDF document.

There is also extensive online help on family history research, including the interpretation of Latin words.
