Baldwin 1810 on
Back to People.

Baldwins were living in Barton Turf through most of the nineteenth century. This branch of the family can be traced back to Thomas Baldwin whose son George married Elizabeth Neave in 1785 and settled in Smallburgh. Their eldest son Matthew came to Barton Turf and married Elizabeth Bullimer there in 1810. Census records show a presence of the family up to 1881, but by 1891 they had all moved elsewhere. Other members of George and Elizabeth’s family remained in Smallburgh or moved to other nearby villages. The Baldwin men were almost all bricklayers and a John Baldwin is believed to have been involved in building the Victory Hall in Neatishead. Intriguingly there were Baldwin bricklayers in other parts of Norfolk, but we have not been able to trace a connection to the Barton Turf and Smallburgh families.
