Farming has been the main economic activity and source of employment in Barton Turf over the centuries.  Between 1841 and 1901 approximately 50% of occupations were directly based on agriculture.

There are now fewer farms than there once were and the names of some of them have changed over time.  In the list below we have used the current or most recent name to identify them.

Barton Hall Farm

Located south of Barton Hall, it has also been known as Hall Farm.

Berry Hall Farm

Located at Barton Berry Hall it was formerly known as Bury Hall Farm.

Church Farm

This was a piggery next to the parish church.

Hall’s Farm

This was located south of Barton Hall.

Home Farm

Located between Barton Common and Pennygate, this was earlier known as Edrich’s Farm.

Ikens Farm

Located on Smallburgh Road, this was at one time called Storeys Farm.

Pennygate Farm

Located in Pennygate, this was earlier known as Mack’s Farm and Gunn’s Farm.

Point Farm

Located close to Barton Common.

Poplar Farm

Located in Hall Road, this was also known as Poplar Poultry Farm.

Staithe Farm

This was located in Staithe Road.

Well’s Farm

This was located at Callow Green.
