The What’s New page is a quick way to check on the latest updates to the website.
The purpose of this page is to let you know about topics we are working on or have been investigating recently.
We have had many valuable contributions to the project, but we would welcome more, especially documents and photographs of historical significance, recollections and anecdotes, and other potential sources of information. If you can help, please contact the project team.
During the course of the project we have amassed a great deal of material that may be of interest to others researching aspects of the history of Barton Turf and the local area. Please contact the project team to find out if we can help.
With the help of the Norfolk Sound Archive, we have launched an oral history project aimed at recording and preserving memories of life in the local area. We have handed over copies of our first set of recordings to the Norfolk Sound Archive which will provide public access and permanent secure storage for recordings, but clips and summaries of memories of Barton Turf will be featured on the Barton Turf History Project website. We are involving members of the community as interviewers, interviewees and summarisers. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact the project team.
The transcript of Barton Turf parish baptism records has been extended to cover the period from 1735 to 1961 .
There were Edrich family members in Barton Turf during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and in Irstead, Hoveton St John and Neatishead. In conjunction with two Edrich descendants, we are currently researching local Edrich family connections. We have added an Edrich page to the website. If you have any interest or information that could be relevant, please contact the project team.
Following the discovery of a Barton Turf School examination results sheet for 1926, the Barton Turf History Project was featured in the September 2011 edition of the Norfolk Ancestor, the journal of the Norfolk Family History Society. This has already resulted in several enquiries for information about families with Barton Turf connections and has also yielded valuable information for the project. More about the examination results sheet can be found on the School page. We will be pleased to receive further enquiries and offers of information. Please contact the project team.
Poor Rate Books for many Norfolk parishes are held at the Norfolk Record Office, but until now there hasn’t been one for Barton Turf. We were recently given the Barton Turf Poor Rate Book for 1893 to 1895 and this has now been passed to the Norfolk Record Office for safe-keeping and can be found on the NROCAT on-line catalogue. The book provides details of owners and occupiers of property and the location of the property, as well as the amounts paid. We photographed the book before handing it over, so if you have a particular query about individual owners, occupiers or properties, we may be able to help. Please contact the project team.
