The Barton Turf branch of the Salmon(s) family has been traced back to John Salmon who married Mary Custick (or possibly Curstead) in Stalham in 1768. Their children were all born in East Ruston and their eldest son John married Margaret Cook in East Ruston in 1789. All their children were born in Dilham, including Susan Salmons, John Salmon’s grandaughter and the founder of the Barton Turf branch of the family. Susan had three sons: the eldest, John, was born in Dilham in 1830 and died in 1841 in Barton Turf. The second son, Henry, was born in Dilham in 1833 but baptised in Barton Turf in 1834. The baptism register does not record details of his father. Henry married Susan Pratt in Barton Turf in 1852 and their descendants formed the Barton Turf Salmon(s) families.
With the help of Salmon(s) descendants who have carried out extensive family research, we have identified 47 descendants of Henry and Susan, of whom 34 have the Salmon(s) name.
When Henry and Susan’s grandson Harry married in 1915 his father, Thomas Henry Salmons’ profession was recorded as Lion Tamer, probably with a local circus.
Harry’s brother Donald emigrated to Canada and then served in the First World War in the Canadian Army. He was killed in action in 1917 and his name is recorded on the War Memorial.
Susan Salmons’ third son Jacob became Jacob Salmon-Cox and founded that Barton Turf family.
The Salmon(s) families are also linked through marriage to the Cox families.
