According to Anthony Norris, Colonel Samuel Venner purchased the Newton estate around 1700 and moved to Barton with his wife Elizabeth. He pulled down most of the old Newton house and built a new house which was to become Barton Hall. After his death in 1712, his wife had the estate until her death in 1723. Both are buried in the nave of Barton Church. Their daughter Elizabeth married John Potter who later became Archbishop of Canterbury. The estate was sold to the Reverend Stephen Norris in 1728. For a fuller account see the transcript of Anthony Norris’s notes.
